Hiking Golden BC

For immediate release

April 24, 2017 Golden, B.C., Canada – Located in the heart of six of the most stunning national parks Canada has to offer, Golden, B.C., is set to welcome tourists from around the world looking for an authentic, unique spring, summer, and fall mountain experience.  Golden offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventurers to enjoy an extended visit to this natural wonderland.

“Golden is truly the ‘Heart of the Parks’ as we are surrounded by Yoho, Glacier, Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Mount Revelstoke national parks,” says Andy Brown of Tourism Golden. “Visitors have an added incentive this year as Parks Canada is offering free admission to all national parks in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.”

Visitors can start their mountain adventure by checking into one of Golden’s wide range of accommodations, ranging from cozy, rustic cottages to large, luxurious lodges, and everything in-between.  If getting deep into the wilderness is more your style, the Golden area boasts more than 20 backcountry lodges, including three of BC’s top five backcountry lodges according to Ski Canada Magazine (Fall 2016 issue).

During your stay, check out Golden’s great selection of cafes, bistros, restaurants, diners, pubs and bars offering a wide range of culinary delights to suit all tastes and budgets.  Rustic fine dining experiences include Whitetooth Mountain Bistro, ELEVEN22, the Island Restaurant, Eagle Eye - Canada’s most elevated dining experience at 7,700 feet above sea level, and others.

Seven days of Golden Adventures!

Day 1 - Whitewater rafting is more exciting than ever with heli-rafting tours.  In a partnership with Alpine Helicopters, Glacier Raft Company offers a thrilling helicopter tour over up the lower canyon of the Kicking Horse River as part of their whitewater rafting ultimate tour packages.  Whitewater adventurers now have the opportunity to take in an aerial perspective of the rapids they will soon brave during their rafting excursions.

Day 2 - Mountain biking!  It’s no wonder Golden has become a magnet for mountain bikers in recent years! Three cross country networks (CBT, Moonrakers & Mountain Shadows) with 129km of trails are easily accessible from town. For the downhill junkies, Golden is home to the infamous Mount 7 trails and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s Gondola access bike park. Golden is proud to host the Western Open BC Cup Downhill Mountain Bike Race, and the Golden24 (two-four) an annual 24 hour mountain biking event.  Golden will also be hosting two Enduro races this year.

Day 3 - Visit the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre, the only place in Canada where you can walk with wolves in their natural environment.  Daily walks are run year round. Feel a little apprehensive? No problem, alternatively you can also view these amazing animals from several viewing stations while getting the whole scoop on the howling canines.

Day 4 - Paragliding or sky-diving - Imagine mountains as far as the eye can see, two rivers and a big open valley beneath you. Golden offers two very different ways to get a bird’s eye view – paragliding and sky-diving! Numerous records have been set for distance and speed from the Mount 7 launch, which is also the location of the annual Willi Muller Championships. Golden is also the home to the only sky-diving operation in N. America located between 2 mountain ranges.  Enjoy the scenic plane ride before you freefall for up to one minute at nearly 200 km/hour!

Day 5 - Yoho National Park Wapta Falls.  Experience a lush, forested walk to the base of an impressive 30 metre waterfall; the largest waterfall on the Kicking Horse River.

Day 6 - Experience wildlife close-up! Meet Boo, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s resident orphan grizzly bear! Bo spends his days exploring the waterfalls and creeks and ponds and sloughs and forests and hills in the largest enclosed and protected grizzly bear habitat in the world.  The facility focuses on educating the public about grizzly bears through its interpretive tours.

Day 7 - Climbing and Mountaineering - Surrounded by the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Selkirks and Purcell Mountains and close to the famous Spires of the Bugaboos, Golden has long been a magnet for mountaineering and sport climbing; in fact three of the ‘Classic 50 Climbs in North America’ are in Golden’s backyard. Today, the tradition continues with the Via Ferrata which opened in July 2015 at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, a state of the art indoor facility at the Dogtooth Climbing gym and many sport climbing pitches in Kicking Horse Pass and at Spillimacheen located south of Golden.

If you find you need a little down-time during your stay, grab a coffee from one of Golden’s many coffee shops and enjoy a riverside walk, followed by an afternoon of indoor skating or bowling.  Or check out one of the following lower-key activities:

Experience a scenic, relaxing canoe or kayak ride in the Columbia Wetlands, North America’s largest protected wetlands. See how many of the over 200 species of wildlife that make this heritage river their habitat you can spot.

Visit the Rogers Pass Discovery Centre in Glacier National Park.  The information centre features a theatre and exhibits about the discovery of Rogers Pass, the construction of Canada’s first trans-continental railway, and natural history displays. Rogers Pass has been designated a National Historic Site in commemoration of its role as an essential link in the building of the transcontinental railway.

Families can enjoy Golden’s outdoor pool and spray park, indoor climbing gym, skate park and tennis courts.

Nestled between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains, and with Holt Creek meandering through this 18 hole championship golf course, Golden Golf Club is credited as being one of the most scenic courses in B.C.

Professional guided world-class spin casting or fly fishing experience! Meandering gently through Golden and the longest protected wetlands in North America, the pristine waters of the Columbia River are home to more than six different species of fish, including rainbow and bull trout.
